Scotland 2011 - Day 2: Falls of Shin and more Brora

The Falls of Shin

The last time Josh and I were here was 12 years ago, on our honeymoon. Who would have guessed that we would be back with two kids!
The falls are a short walk down from the visitor's center (which has excellent mac & cheese by the way). The main attraction is when the salmon are leaping but that doesn't normally happen until August. There are lots of forest walks, an adventure playground and a BBQ area on the patio. We drove from Brora towards Lairg and then turned off to the falls. Instead of coming back the same way, we did a circular route passing by the village of Rogart. It was a beautiful drive.
On our way back, we drove through the village of Lairg and decided to stop at their visitor's center. They had on a great exhibition of "Lairg through time" which the kids found entertaining. It was a nice stop...and I got a cool tartan brooch. A little bling for my trouble!
When we got back to Brora, we stopped at Capaldi's Ice Cream. Now, you must understand that this ice cream shop is the stuff of legend at my house when I was growing up. No ice cream could possibly be as good as Capaldi's.
We concur.
We went back to Elinor and Ronnie (Roxy's) house and settled in for the night. As we were just about to get jammies on, we heard a sound that I have not heard in many, many years. The ice cream van! Oh this is something the Swiss need to adopt. Nothing is more exciting on a summer's eve, when you are up late because the sun is too and you hear the jingle of the ice cream van!! Josh and I leapt out of our seats, instantaneously becoming our 7 year-old selves, and got out there before the kids did.
Ice cream then an iced lolly? I hear you ask.
Oh yes. That is how we roll. Those are good days.

The day ended with more cuddles from Nana Brora.
